THE NEED
When Laundry Isn’t Accessible, Everything Gets HarderFor many in our community, doing laundry isn’t simple—it’s expensive, inaccessible, or impossible. Without clean clothes, people face barriers to employment, health and hygiene challenges, and loss of confidence and connection.You can’t show up ready if you don’t have clean clothes to wear.
THE DATA
In March 2026, DignitySOS conducted a community survey in Wichita County, Texas, to better understand local laundry needs. The results were clear: for individuals and families living paycheck to paycheck, the greatest barrier to accessing clean clothing is cost.

A single wash cycle at a laundromat typically costs between $4 and $7 per load. Drying adds another expense, often requiring around 45 minutes at approximately $0.25 per seven minutes. When detergent, bleach, dryer sheets, transportation, and other necessities are added, the cost of doing laundry quickly becomes overwhelming.
HEALTH CONCERNS
Our survey also revealed a gap in resources specifically around physical and mental health through sleep. Respondents without running water and/or without in-home washing/drying capability reported that they do not wash towels, sheets, blankets, or other bedding regularly. Some do not wash these items at all or only once per quarter or, at most, once per month.

Our neighbors are sleeping on pillowcases that haven't been washed, drying off after bathing with dirty towels, and simply throw away sheets and blankets rather than try to get them laundered.
This is a health risk for all ages. "Washing or changing your sheets at least once a week provides you a safe place to rest without having to worry about what’s crawling on your skin." (Cleveland Clinic)
THE HIDDEN DETAILS
Beyond the financial burden, there is also the cost of time. Many of our neighbors work multiple jobs, irregular schedules, or every available hour just to make ends meet. Finding the time to travel to a laundromat, wait for machines, and complete multiple loads can be nearly impossible.
Access to clean clothing is about more than appearance. It affects health, employment, school attendance, self-confidence, and dignity. That's why DignitySOS is committed to removing barriers and making laundry services accessible to those who need them most.
OUR IMPACT
DignitySOS is uniquely positioned to provide free laundry services to those who need it most. Our free, hot, mobile shower service already puts us in front of many who also have issues keeping laundry clean. Our mobile structure provides resources where there are none.

We will begin with one load per week, plus sheets/blankets and grow from there. Based on feedback from our survey and our shower guests, we anticipate 40-60 loads in our first month of operation.
